Creating a Self-Care Routine: Breath, Body, and Presence

In a world where everything feels urgent, many people postpone self-care for “when there’s time.” But well-being should not be a luxury—it should be a daily, accessible practice.

From osteopathy and mindfulness, we understand self-care not as a one-time action, but as a way of inhabiting the body with awareness and sustaining health in the long term.

In this article, I propose a simple and realistic way to create your own self-care routine, combining three essential pillars: breathing, the body, and presence.

1. Breathing: your most immediate tool
Breathing is a direct bridge between your body and your nervous system. In moments of stress, anxiety, or mental agitation, few things are as effective as returning to it.

Simple exercise:

  1. Take 3 minutes a day to breathe consciously.
  2. Inhale through your nose for 4 counts, exhale for 6.
  3. Do it sitting or lying down, without distractions.
  4. Notice how your body softens as you exhale.

From osteopathy, we work with the diaphragm and the respiratory system so that this breathing becomes freer and more natural.

2. The body: listening before reacting
Shoulder tension, back pain, a clenched jaw… the body is constantly speaking. Including body practices in your routine is key to releasing tension and preventing discomfort.

Practical suggestions:

  • Take a mindful walk, paying attention to how you move and breathe.
  • Do gentle stretches in the morning or before bed.
  • Schedule regular osteopathy sessions to keep your body in balance.

Osteopathy not only relieves physical symptoms but also helps you regain sensory connection with your body.

3. Presence: being where you are
Mindfulness trains you to return to the present moment. Without needing to make big changes, you can start by bringing more awareness to your daily gestures: eating, showering, walking, talking to someone.

Start here:
Choose one daily activity and do it with full attention.
No phone, no multitasking. Just presence.

This practice reduces mental stress and improves your relationship with yourself.

Your routine doesn’t have to be perfect, only consistent
You don’t need to do everything at once. What matters is creating small, sustainable actions you can integrate into your everyday life. Breathing, stretching, paying attention—these are simple ways to reconnect with yourself.

Dedicating a few minutes to self-care is not selfish—it’s preventive health. It’s a way of reminding your nervous system that you can inhabit your body with calm, not just urgency.
