How expensive does my pillow need to be?

There are a lot of expensive pillows out there, moulded, foam, cervical, feather, etc etcHow expensive does my pillow need to be?

But which is the right one for you? And how much money should you spend?

I can’t say how much money you need to spend; that is your decision, but I CAN give you a few pointers about what the pillow should be doing to help you get a good, comfortable night’s sleep.

Having a strong, supportive base pillow is there to support your head, and to stop your head from tipping back and your mouth falling open. It is much better to breathe through your nose while your mouth is gently closed. The pillow doesn’t want to be too high so that your neck is tipping forward and obstructing your airways and obstructing your breathing. The pillow needs to be firm, and you can choose the material you prefer, foam, feather, silicone and so on.

If you are a side sleeper, I would recommend having a second, smaller pillow. Something that is easily scrunched up and soft, often a small feather cushion will do, or an old, soft pillowcase stuffed with a few T-shirts.

Turn onto your side, reach your hand up to your shoulder, and pull down and forward so you bring your shoulder down and out into neutral position (you can also reach under the shoulder blade and pull down). Now raise your head and slide your small pillow in the space you have just made. It feels very comfortable; your neck feels supported, the muscles can relax, and you will get a good night’s sleep with no tension held into the neck or shoulder.
